          Sludge Treatment: Methods for Sludge Composting

              Recently, the total amount of municipal sludge and sewage increases sharply. Sludge composting products contain much nutrients. Therefore, sludge composting can be used as fertilizer for lawn, flowers and vegetables. Affected by disposal technology, people’s understanding, national regulations, products’ way-out and relative policies, sludge composting methods still face with much negative factors which are urgent to be solved.
              Sludge composting method can realize harmlessness, thickening and reclamation. Sludge composting can not only accept manure, sawdust and leaves and other wastes, but also can improve the quality of sludge composting. Fertilizer produced by sludge composting can be widely applied to agriculture and urban landscaping. It is suitable for our country’s present situation where major agricultural country and rapid urbanization need much fertilizer.
              There are three major composting processes, namely high-temperature aerobic composting process, wet anaerobic digestion process and dry anaerobic digestion process.
              In terms of present situation, compared with aerobic composting process, anaerobic digestion process holds higher reclamation. Considering realities in this project, there are several elements which are not suitable to adopt anaerobic digestion process. 
          1. Owing to small scale and low gas output, large energy consumption and difficult maintenance, the process is harder to realize.
          2. The utilization of bio-gas is limited by environment nearby. Because there is not much amount of bio-gas, it is not an economic way to use a bio-gas generator units.
          3. In terms of technology, although anaerobic digestion technology has been applied to foreign countries, there is no such example at home. Also, this process is not mature in large-scale production. Running and management are also very complex.  
             At present, china has started a series of research on sludge composting disposal, but there is still a certain gap between our technology and great demand, which leads to following problems in municipal sludge disposal:
          1. Present technologies are not very stable, which affects the quality of composting. the organic fertilizer doesn’t hold good market and lack competitiveness.
          2. Technologies at home lag behind. We are much inclined to introducing foreign technologies. However, foreign technologies are characterized by high investment, expensive equipment, difficult maintenance, high running cost and large energy consumption. As a result, foreign technologies are not suitable for China.
          3. Although composting disposal of wastes are paid more and more attention by human, the disposal efficiency and quality of finished products are still restraint factors.
             Aimed at problems mentioned above, we can improve the present situation by following ways:
          1. Adopt automatic monitoring and control equipment in order to produce high-quality and harmless fertilizer.
          2. Optimize composting equipment in order to achieve lowest energy consumption.
